Being a realtor is tough these days. With falling home prices leaving fewer buyers in the market and fewer transactions for agents, it’s becoming increasingly important for real estate agents to get a leg up on their competitors. Developing a strong online presence is one of the best ways for a realtor to be found by more home sellers (and buyers).
For a realtor to be found on the internet, they need a solid SEO (search engine optimization) strategy. Here are five SEO tips that will benefit realtors:
- Build your own website
Realtors usually have the option to either use a company-provided site that is tailored with their name and local information, or building a site of their own. A company site might look professional and be well-designed, but it won’t help you when you’re trying to establish your own name and your own brand in the marketplace. A company site may also not be SEO-optimized (more on that later), so if given the choice it’s better to build your own site or have one custom-designed for you.
- Do proper keyword research
Before you start building the pages for your website, you need to find out what keyword phrases are being used in your local area to look for realtors. This can be done free of charge using the Google keyword tool at: http://www.googlekeywordtool.com/
For example, if you are a realtor in Austin, TX, you will want to start with a search for a keyword phrase like “realtors austin tx” or something like that. Google will then tell you how many searches it gets per month, as well as search results for related keyword phrases.
- Set up your on-page SEO
After you’ve selected 4 or 5 of the best keyword phrases to target, you want to structure your site to be attractive to the search engine spiders for these phrases. It is best to create the basic pages like the home, about, contact, and privacy, then a page targeted to each specific keyword phrase. On each page, the keyword phrase should be in the title, meta-tags, image-alt tags, and appearing a few times within the body of the text.
- Set up your off-page SEO
Off-page SEO consists mainly of back linking. Backlinks can be acquired from a variety of sources, and it’s best to have as diverse a linking strategy as possible. Some sources for links include articles, press releases, blog commenting, video submissions, and many others.
- Add regular content to your site
The search engines love fresh, updated content, and if you have that on your site, they will reward you for it. The best way to accomplish this is by starting a blog and writing a new post once or twice a week. If you don’t have time to keep your blog update with fresh posts, consider hiring a writer to do it for you.
